About Graduate Supervisors 

A Graduate Supervisor at Cleveland State University will gain the essential work and educational experience needed to obtain full-time employment in the sport management or exercise science field, particularly in campus recreation.  A Graduate Supervisor is required to work 20 hours per week in their supervisory role and up to 8 paid hours per week in various capacities throughout the recreation center (i.e. facility supervisor, intramural supervisor, membership representative, fitness instructor, personal trainer, etc.).  While recreation services cannot provide tuition remission to a Graduate Supervisor your annual earnings will help offset the cost of tuition. Graduate Supervisors must be accepted into a College of Graduate Studies at Cleveland State University- and maintain good academic standing while in the Graduate Supervisor role. 

Responsibilities

Position Description:  

Under the direction of the Assistant Director-Fitness & Aquatics, the Adventure Recreation Graduate Supervisor will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the adventure recreation program area to include outdoor trips and instruction, equipment rentals, team building, and various clinics. 

 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of an Adventure program to include Outdoor Trips, Outdoor Instruction, and Teambuilding Initiatives
  • Supervise, manage and schedule aspects of the Teambuilding, Adventure Trips and Outdoor Instruction programs
  • Develop, schedule, supervise and lead diverse outdoor trip programs to include adventure trips and instructional workshops in various outdoor activities
  • Assist with oversight on the teambuilding program to include facilitating campus, corporate and private group initiative and adventure education training
  • Responsible for the purchasing and maintenance of outdoor equipment
  • Responsible for all components of design, documentation, administration, and implementation of a well-researched Risk Management plan to manage risk and minimize the factors contributing to accidents and injury 
  • Assist with the oversight, training and supervision of staff hiring, scheduling, supervision and completion of bi-weekly payroll and monthly report
  • Assist with the annual budget to include preparation, forecasting, and monitoring of expense and revenue as it relates to area of responsibility
  • Supervise the day camp programs and spring break camp programs  
  • Attend all Staff and Committee meetings as assigned
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Advertising to create informational pieces relative to area of responsibility 
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of all program and service supplies
  • Assist with purchasing equipment and items as needed for specific programs   

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for the operating, preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets as it relates to Adventure Recreation area 
  • Create, develop and enforce administrative policies and procedures as it relates to Camps.  
    Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Teambuilding facilitators, Adventure trip leaders and workshop instructors 
  • Develop and revise recreation center administrative policy and procedure and risk management manuals 
  • Responsible for staying up to date in all the current trends in adventure education, camps and initiatives 
  • Manage budget, strategic planning, and assessment as it pertains to the program area 
  • Prepare regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial and participation reports and equipment inventory reports 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sport management or related field
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record 
  • Accepted to the University’s Master’s program 
  • Must maintain good academic standing within master’s program while working 
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 8 credit hours per semester  
  • At least 1-2 years of progressive experience within adventure recreation and trip leading 
  • Demonstrated outdoor skills in rock climbing, hiking and backpacking, kayaking and canoeing, and facilitating teambuilding initiatives 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Wilderness First Responder Certification with AED/CPR preferred 
  • Experience overseeing part-time staff within camp and adventure recreation 
  • Ability to sell and rent outdoor equipment  

Technical Competencies: 

  • Some knowledge of HR theories and best practices in recruitment and staff development 
  • Basic accounting knowledge; capability of understanding budgets 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
