Mylan Park owns, programs, leases, and manages over 350 acres of mixed-use recreation, social, health, and wellness facilities for the Greater Morgantown community.  Through a public private partnership with WVU, Mylan Park is also home to a variety of both indoor and outdoor Intramural, Club Sports, and NCAA Big 12 Collegiate Athletic programs.  This partnership provides priority use of over 50 acres of field space, and more than 140,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art indoor facilities, for programs including WVU Swimming & Diving, indoor soccer, softball, rugby, flag football, WVU Women’s Track & Field, cheer, boxing, outdoor soccer, lacrosse, roller derby, and more.


Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Facilities & Operations, the Grounds Coordinator performs work planning, directing, and supervising the repair and maintenance of the park’s grounds and common areas.  This includes ensuring physical grounds and common areas are clean and aesthetically appealing, managing park grounds and common areas improvement projects, and establishing, implementing, and developing park grounds and common areas maintenance goals, policies, and standard operating procedures.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform and direct the general maintenance and up keep of park grounds and common areas
  • Serve as point of contact for all park grounds and common areas stakeholders to ensure high customer standards and product delivery are maintained
  • Responsible for daily cleaning of all park grounds and common areas to ensure a safe and risk-free environment
  • Operate various types of equipment to include the proper calibration of weed eaters, edger’s, line strippers, tractors, turf equipment, aerators and other tools used to maintain park grounds and common areas as needed
  • Participate in the implementation of new renovations of park grounds and common areas related projects
  • Anticipate and plan for rolling maintenance equipment and supply expenses to adhere to budgeted expense lines
  • Perform and direct removal of refuse and trash from park grounds and common areas Oversee planting, trimming, mulching, mowing, weeding and fertilizing of flowers, shrubs, trees and other landscaping as necessary to ensure high aesthetic standards are maintained
  • Responsible for inventory, ordering, and stocking all park grounds and common areas related equipment and supplies
  • Responsible for the daily and weekly inspection of park grounds and common areas focused on risk management issues
  • Execute preventative maintenance plan as scheduled for all park grounds and common areas equipment
  • Assist with set-up, tear-down, and on-site support of major community and athletic events

Recruitment/Staff Development:

  • Lead a dynamic and comprehensive grounds and athletic fields maintenance team to meet the needs of Mylan Park and its stakeholders
  • Hire, supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate both full-time and part-time staff.  Direct reports will include a minimum of two full-time professionals – Fields Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Assistant
  • Create, encourage and support professional development opportunities for the grounds and fields team, including professional association involvement, training programs and mentoring
  • Lead the grounds and fields maintenance team in implementing park policies and procedures

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Assist with long-term planning, capital expense planning and forecast equipment replacement
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Evaluate performance and effectiveness of areas of responsibility through regular assessment
  • Responsible for ensuring areas of responsibility stay in line with current trends
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma is required, bachelor’s or associate’s degree is preferred
  • At least 3 years of grounds and common area maintenance experience is preferred
  • Ability to plan and direct work activities, to manage time effectively, and set priorities
  • Knowledge of park grounds and common areas related operations and safety practices
  • Ability to operate specialized equipment
  • Ability to read (training material, work schedules), write (correspondence, accident reports), and accurately follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to demonstrate physical dexterity and to lift 75 pounds
  • Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with the public in person
  • Ability to carry out or assist in implementing changes
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
  • The ability to operate computers for scheduling, email and data entry/retrieval
  • Ability to identify turf pests and institute turfgrass maintenance and treatment
  • Ability to manage and coordinate the work of technical consultants and/or contractors

  • Project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment

  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED/FA certification (or willing to obtain)

Technical Competencies

  • Some knowledge of HR philosophies and best practices in working within a team.
  • Basic accounting knowledge; capability of understanding of budgets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
