University of New Haven - David A. Beckerman Recreation Center  


David A. Beckerman Recreation Center opened in December 2007. This 56,000 sq. ft. multipurpose recreation facility consists of 6,000 sq. ft. of dedicated fitness space featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment, 1/10th-mile suspended indoor jogging/walking track, a two-court gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and badminton, an enclosed multi-activity court designed for a variety of activities including floor hockey and indoor soccer, two racquetball courts, two group exercise performance studios, a juice bar, locker rooms and lounge spaces. In 2009, the facility received an Architectural Showcase award from Athletic Business magazine.


The Assistant Director – Intramural Sports & Member/Guest Services is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive intramural program and member/guest services/operations of the Beckerman Recreation Center.

Core Responsibilities:


Recruitment/Staff Development

  • Directly oversee and supervise student staff including RECSports Supervisors, RECSports Officials, Customer Service Attendants, and Area Specialists as well as the Graduate Assistant – Intramural Sports 
  • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate and provide direction student staff 
  • Assist in coordination of facility staff hiring sessions
  • Ensure staff compliance of required certifications.
  • Build, encourage, and support professional development opportunities for student staff, including individual mentoring
  • Create an environment that inspires innovation and effective student development outcomes

Program Administration and Development

  • Oversee a comprehensive RECSports (Intramural) program including league sports, one-day tournaments, special events, etc. 
  • Develop and implement new and diverse RECSports (Intramural) programs to meet the needs of the campus community
  • Collaborate with campus community and organizations on programs
  • Serve as primary risk manager for RECSports (Intramural) program
  • Oversee facility scheduling for RECSports (Intramural) program
  • Serve as on-site administrator as needed for RECSports programs
  • Lead/Assist department wide program and special events

Welcome Desk & Member/Guest Service Operations

  • Responsible for all member/guest processes including oversight of the Beckerman Recreation Center Welcome Desk
  • Maintain and revise operations policies and procedures on an ongoing basis
  • Provide shift support during peak usage times
  • Serve as primary contact for member/guest inquiries including oversight of departmental e-mail, social media accounts, and department-wide announcements

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Compile quarterly and annual reports for member/guest operations
  • Assemble, track, and review student employee paperwork, payroll, and timecards on a weekly basis
  • Secure, reconcile, and ensure all revenue is completed in compliance with CENTERS policy as well as daily transactions, deposits, payroll deductions, payments with the CSI system, etc.
  • Manage budgets for programming, staffing, and equipment. Provide recommendations to Director for capital equipment repairs and replacement

Site Specific Responsibilities:

  • Attend office, staff, and department meetings/events as scheduled
  • Represent CENTERS and the University of New Haven at workshops and conferences
  • Lead representation for Department of Campus Recreation student orientations and admissions events
  • Assist other program areas and facility operations as needed
  • Instruct CPR/AED and First Aid Classes and In-Services as needed
  • Serve on various campus committees as needed
  • Other duties as required


Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters preferred
  • At least two years’ experience working in recreation required (collegiate recreation is preferred)
  • Graduate assistant/supervisor experience will be accepted
  • Oversight of an intramural program including scheduling, officiating, administration, etc.
  • Membership/Desk and Facility Operations preferred
  • Familiarity with recreation/membership software; experience with CSI and/or is preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and to function in a high energy environment
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification; Instructor Certification is preferred
  • Willingness to support the mission and values of both CENTERS and the University of New Haven
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of standard practices in recreational sports
