Mylan Park is a state-of-the-art recreational and educational complex located on over 300 acres of beautifully reclaimed surface-mined property just minutes from downtown Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mylan Park Foundation, Inc. advances the educational, recreational, social and economic benefits to North Central West Virginia citizens, with the purpose of improving the quality of life for residents of, and visitors to, the Greater Morgantown area.  Through a strategic partnership with WVU, Mylan Park is home to a variety of both indoor and outdoor Intramural, Club Sports, and NCAA Big 12 Collegiate Athletic programs.  This partnership provides priority use of over 50 acres of field space, and more than 125,000 sq. ft. of state of the art indoor facilities, for programs including WVU swimming & Diving, indoor soccer, softball, rugby, flag football, WVU Women’s Track & Field, cheer, boxing, outdoor soccer, lacrosse, roller derby, and more.


Grounds Manager is the primary caretaker of all outdoor areas of the park. This position is responsible for maintaining, and readying for use, all athletic fields, common area grounds and roads including mowing, laying out and painting lines, aeration and fertilization, infield prep, field setup, landscaping, snow removal and trash removal.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform and direct the installation, fertilization, seeding, verticutting of athletic fields and the general maintenance and up keep of facility concourses and tract areas
  • Supervises and participates in the lining, painting and preparation of fields and equipment for games and practices for general community, high school, and NCAA events
  • Serve as point of contact for all grounds and fields stakeholders to ensure high customer standards and product delivery are maintained
  • Responsible for daily cleaning and organization of all outdoor areas of the park to ensure the park safe and risk free
  • Initiate and monitor irrigation system to ensure proper watering practices to coincide with seasonal requirements and athletic schedules
  • Operate various types of equipment to include the proper calibration of weed eaters, edgers, line strippers, tractors, turf equipment, aerators and other tools used to maintain grounds as needed
  • Participate and assists in the implementation of new renovations and athletic field related projects.
  • Anticipate and plan for rolling maintenance equipment and supply expenses to adhere to budgeted expense lines
  • Perform and direct removal of refuse and trash from athletic fields, track facilities, and parking lots
  • Oversee planting, trimming, mulching, mowing, weeding and fertilizing of flowers, shrubs, trees and other landscaping as necessary to ensure high aesthetic standards are maintained
  • Responsible for inventory, ordering, and stocking all grounds related equipment and supplies
  • Responsible to seasonal opening and closing of all athletic fields, common area grounds and roads
  • Responsible for the daily and weekly inspection of various activity areas focused on risk management issues as well cleanliness and organization and will inform the direct supervisor if any service requests are needed
  • Execute preventative maintenance plan as scheduled for all grounds equipment
  • Assist with set-up, tear-down, and on-site support of major community and athletic events

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with long-term planning, capital expense planning and forecast equipment replacement
  • Responsible for the supervision of part-time employees within scope of facility areas
  • Evaluate performance and effectiveness of areas of responsibility through regular assessment
  • Responsible for ensuring areas of responsibility stay in line with current trends
  • Responsible for supervision, training and mentoring subordinate staff
  • Oversee policies and procedures development for all areas of responsibility
  • Assist in managing budget, strategic planning, and assessment as it pertains to areas of responsibility
  • Prepare regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial and participation reports and equipment inventory reports
  • Manage payroll as needed; maintain payroll records and reports
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma is required, bachelor’s or associate’s degree is preferred
  • At least 3 years of fields and grounds maintenance experience is preferred  
  • Ability to plan and direct work activities, to manage time effectively, and set priorities
  • Knowledge of grounds related operations and safety practices
  • Ability to operate specialized equipment
  • Ability to read (training material, work schedules), write (correspondence, accident reports), and accurately follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to demonstrate physical dexterity and to lift 75 pounds
  • Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with the public in person
  • Ability to carry out or assist in implementing changes
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, 
  • fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
  • The ability to operate computers for scheduling, email and data entry/retrieval
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED/FA certification (or willing to obtain)



Technical Competencies

  • Some knowledge of HR theories and best practices in recruitment and staff development
  • Basic accounting knowledge; capability of understanding budgets
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
